Spring Show has sprung

Another year, another fantastic Spring Show, at the Academy of Art University. This year, when it came to hot student work, the buzz was so strong that it took two entire buildings to hold it. Strong creative vibes permeated an entire block as students, teachers, judges, parents, journalists and industry leaders strolled a combined 13 floors of work. And although the forecast was damp and dreary, the day ended triumphantly sunny. I think it’s a metaphor for the careers of those newly-minted creatives.

It was, of course, our job to capture it all for you. We filed dozens of Tweets and even gathered your Tweets tagged #springshow. We took hundreds and hundreds of photos, so many that we couldn’t caption them all, so if you’re a student, be sure to find your work and tag it so the world knows it’s yours. We recorded many video interviews with students, including a special video of Academy teacher Michael Osborne talking about his Kmart rebranding class with his students. And we also conducted a live video interview with one Academy teacher who couldn’t be there yesterday, Debbie Millman, who joined us via iChat from her New York studio. Most of her Art of the Story class was able to join us for the live chat, which we captured in a video.

And then, at 5pm on the dot, we threw open the mysterious coolers in the corner of the room to reveal pure unadulterated joy in four flavors: Cookies and cream on dark chocolate, vanilla on chocolate chip, mint chip on dark chocolate and strawberry balsamic on sugar cookies. Seeing as our liveblogging pit was located in the graphic design department, we were also thrilled to be privy to the awarding of four scholarships at the end of the day, thanks to jurors Scott Hansen, Armin Vit, Laura Shore, Mick Hodgson, Camilla Bravo and Patrick Coyne. Jayde Cardinalli and Eisuke Taki from BFA and Crystal Chou and Elizabeth Vereker from MFA each won $1000 scholarships thanks to Chipotle and American Greetings. According to Mary Scott, director of BFA students for the school of graphic design, the school works closely with these corporations who sponsor major projects for the students. This real-life experience not only exposes students to the rigor of serious client work, the student ideas are often so radical that they shake professionals out of their conventional ways.

It was a thrilling day, but this is the part we start to get a little sad because it’s all over. However, it’s not over for you. We’ve got this site up here, of course, with plenty of content to keep you entertained for weeks. And remember, if you find yourself in San Francisco anytime between now and June 10, the show is open 10am to 6pm every day except Sunday.
